I have been at a camp in some capacity every summer since 1987. There have been obstacles along the way, including pandemics, but summer camp has always found a way to keep isolated from the outside world. I had remained positive throughout this crisis that we had plenty of time to flatten the curve and get everyone to camp. My positivity always hinged on our ability to create a safe environment that would allow campers to socialize, play sports, and most importantly stay healthy, which will always be my first priority. After talking with doctors, studying the CDC and ACA guidelines, and reviewing all regulations from the state of Maine, I don’t see a path forward to safely and effectively run our program the way it should be run. It is a heartbreaking decision to have to close camp for the summer, but I cannot in good conscience jeopardize the health of our campers, staff, and your family.
If your son was going to be a SR this summer (current 9th grader) we are working on a super senior/CIT program for next summer. This way our oldest campers will not lose their final summer at camp and in addition have the opportunity to come back the following year as a counselor. More info on this program will be sent in the Fall. If your son was going to be a CIT (current 10th grade) we are going to extend our CIT program so that he will have the ability to complete the CIT experience and also have the opportunity to be counselor the following summer. I am proud to say that over half of this year's staff have been BSC campers.
I'm not sure what all of us are going to do this summer without camp. There are so many things that we (the BSC community) are going to miss out on, but take comfort in knowing it's only temporary. We will be back next summer (for what will be our 10th anniversary) better than ever! I can’t wait to celebrate that milestone with all of you because we wouldn't be here if it weren't for your trust in us in helping develop your son, both on and off the fields.
It's been very uplifting having our virtual campfires and seeing all of the campers online. We will keep them going sporadically throughout the summer. I’ll send reminders, but please have your son continue to follow us on social media for dates & times. We will also be posting a message for campers this afternoon on Facebook and Instagram.
I’m counting down the days until Summer 2021, in the meantime, stay safe, be well and I’ll be in touch soon,
